Sometimes, his wife, Stephanie, would come in and ask what was wrong with him, pointing out he had a beautiful family and a beautiful home and a beautiful life. It was like he was empty. McBrayer never discussed his depression with church members, but he often heard from them that God should be enough, and those who were anxious or sad just didn't trust God.

McBrayer's mental health struggles culminated in during a family vacation at a Florida beach. In the book, he describes walking out into the ocean and considering ending his life by drowning. After revealing his suicidal ideation to a pastor friend, McBrayer started seeing a Nashville therapist, who helped him work through the depression.
