Returning to Marham that night, we scaled the perimeter fence and advanced in the gloom towards the planes. We were all duly arrested and charged under Section 1. There was no promise, no ring, no announcement, no engagement party, certainly no proposed wedding date. It was what most people think of as having a relationship. The question of marriage never came up.

As an undergraduate at Oxford, Wynford Hicks was indeed the noble figure, with golden locks and a flowing beard, remembered by Charlotte Johnson in her interview with Tatler LRB10 September. I vividly remember the moment when he got up to interrupt the Liberal politician Jeremy Thorpe, who was speaking in a debate at the Oxford Union.

Wynford Hicks was schooled by the Jesuits at Stonyhurst College and won a scholarship in history to Christ Church, Oxford, where he was secretary of the Oxford Union debating society and chaired the university Labour club; joined the anti-nuclear Committee of and co-founded the Oxford anarchist group; taught in east London schools for a year; worked for the Daily Mail, Radio Times, the Times Literary Supplement, the Observer magazine, Police Review and Cornmarket Press where he edited BOAC s inflight magazine; wrote a column for Freedom, the anarchist weekly; founded and edited the alternative news magazine Inside Story; and taught journalism from to at the London College of Printing, City University and various publishing companies.
