The story is most often told from the perspective of Herakles. Carson uses Stesichoros as a base for her novel, attempting to fill the gaps of the fragmented Geryoneis. Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse follows Geryon, a red-winged person, from childhood to adulthood, detailing his relationship with others, including Herakles, a friend who becomes a lover, then someone who is longed for.

Geryon undergoes a series of challenges throughout the novel while he constructs his autobiography and explores volcanoes with Herakles. Instead most of the scenes are outside. He takes road trips with Herakles. Evidently, as Geryon becomes more involved with Herakles, he becomes more involved and active with the outside world. Consequently, when Geryon and Herakles separate, we initially see Geryon back inside.

He returns home, sits across from his mother in the kitchen, and we can feel the tension in the room. With Herakles no longer in close proximity, just like that, Geryon experiences inner turmoil — trying to discover his purpose, who he is and what he wants to accomplish. This is a far cry from the inside Geryon experienced as a boy before he came to begin accepting himself.
